Crop Trader ADM Invests Money Into Firm Making Meat Out of Air
ADM Ventures, the venture capital arm of ADM is pouring money into a start-up making meat from elements of the air. The California-based company Air Protein combines carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen with water and minerals in a probiotic production process that converts the elements into nutrients. ADM one of the world’s largest agricultural commodity traders.
Meat through fermentation
It all sounds very futuristic, but Air Protein’s chief executive officer, Lisa Dyson, says it’s like making yoghurt, a process that involves live cultures, but that requires no arable land. If scalable, the technology will help cut agriculture emissions and even improve food security as the product can be made anywhere independent of climate, soil and weather conditions.
ADM looks for sustainable options for alternative proteins
ADM is a global leader in alternative proteins, and wants leverage its vast experience with fermentation solutions to help bring Air Protein’s innovative new ideas to the market.
Air Protein to invest money in product development labs
Air Protein will use the funds to start an innovation lab, accelerate product development and commercialisation, as well as to recruit and build a “world-class” team. There’s no set time line yet for when the alternative meat will reach the market.
